Did you know that it’s Superhero Day on 28th May? If that’s not marked on your calendar (and honestly, why is it not) you might be more aware that the new Avengers movie “Avengers: Infinity War” is released in the UK this week on 26 April.
While we’re talking all things superhero, we thought we’d take a look at some of our favourite Marvel characters (only picking a few has been tough).
Iron Man (Tony Stark) had to make the list. He’s one of the original founders of the Avengers, and in our opinion, one of the best. His powered suit of armour gives him superhuman strength, allows him to fly and gives him powerful weapons. If you’re not a comic book reader you’ll recognise him as being portrayed by Robert Downey Junior in both the Iron Man and Avengers films.
Peter Parker was just a science-geek with a big crush on the girl next door until he was bitten by a radioactive spider in a lab and became Spider-Man. He can (unsurprisingly) do everything a spider can – scale walls, swing from skyscraper to skyscraper and he’s pretty handy in a fight too. A number of actors have played him but most recently Toby Maguire, Andrew Garfield and Tom Holland (in Avengers: Infinity War).
Representing the ladies we have Black Widow – former Russian spy, Agent of S.H.I.E.L.D, Avenger and all-round female boss. She’s a world class gymnast who practises more martial arts than we could even name. She’s also got extensive weapons knowledge and heals faster than the normal human rate (which comes in handy for someone involved in so much combat). Portrayed by Scarlett Johanson, Black Widow is rumoured to finally be getting her own movie.
We couldn’t list our favourite Marvel Characters without shouting out Wolverine. Being one of the X-Men gives him some pretty cool mutant genes – including animal-like senses, healing factor, and of course those famous retractable claws. Hugh Jackman has played the part of Wolverine in the X-Men films as well as The Wolverine and Logan. We can’t help but like him, even though he’s tough and, let’s face it, pretty moody.
There are superheroes and then there’s Thor – who also happens to be an actual God (there’s always one who has to go one better isn’t there?). His hammer Mjolnir lets him fly and manipulate the weather - well, he is the God of thunder after all. He’s also got superhuman strength, can travel through time and is almost immune to injury. Chris Hemsworth has portrayed him in the Thor films, and the Avengers, with Tom Hiddleston playing his brother and nemesis Loki.
So there you have it – just a few of our favourite Marvel characters. Do you agree? Who would have made your list?
