Festival season is in full swing, but let’s face it – camping, crowds and mud aren’t everyone’s cup of tea. But fear not because outdoor movie festivals and screenings are sweeping the nation, so you can enjoy the great outdoors and a festival vibe knowing that you can return to the comfort of your own bed in the evening. Here are some events to check out if you fancy a bit of outdoor cinema…
The Luna Cinema holds events all over the country. From Edinburgh to Kent, from castles to parks – there’s an event for everyone. Some notable ones coming up that look pretty epic are The Shape of Water at Edinburgh’s Royal Botanical Gardens and The Greatest Showman at Warwick Castle. There are loads of events planned throughout the UK so why not grab some fold up chairs and a picnic and head to one near you – book tickets here. If you’ve got little ones, the Luna Cinema also does special screenings and showings for kids, though the locations are a little more limited. Visit the website for more information.
Summer Nights Film festivals bring you a host of great films – from old classics like Dirty Dancing to new titles like Dunkirk. If that wasn’t enough, you’ll get to enjoy watching from the grounds of some of the UK’s most beautiful stately homes – like Attingham Park in Shrewsbury or Dunham Massey in Cheshire. Some of their events also include fireworks, just to make it that little bit more spectacular. Find out more here.
If you’re based in London, check out Rooftop Film Club. They’ve taken the outdoor cinema vibe one step further and all films are shown – you guessed it – on the rooftop of one of their three London locations, so you’ll be able to enjoy the view as much as the film. Unlike the more one-off outdoor movie events, they also provide comfy deck chairs, so no need to lug chairs with you. One of their venues even allows dogs – but it’s best to double check this.
Moonlight Drive in Cinema is a different spin on the Outdoor Cinema trend, taking inspiration from the classic American drive-ins on the 50s and 60s. Book tickets, pull up and enjoy – you don’t even have to leave your car. There is food available too, so you don’t have to take a picnic with you and you can quite literally combine dinner and a movie, what’s not to love? There are two locations, one in Kent and one in Castleford and the films on offer are as up to date as it gets – check them out here.
